After closing and improving the top tourist destination of the Philippines, Boracay in 2018, Manila Bay is the next government project of President Rodrigo Duterte Administration.
In fact, the President has approved the rehabilitation project. According to the report of RMN, DZRH and other mainstream media, it will take seven years to rehabilitate the Manila Bay.
It is estimated that the government will spend about P47 billion to restore the beauty of Manila Bay.
Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Roy Cimatu recommends the President to rehabilitate Manila Bay, according to Department of Budget and Management (DBM) secretary Benjamin Diokno.
Additional funding for the rehabilitation will be taken from road user's tax, said Presidential spokesman Salvador Panelo.
The P47-billion allocation will be still under the annual programming of the government fund, according to Diokno.
Manila Bay is known for having the best sunset in the world. However, its water is unsafe because of domestic sewage, toxic industrial effluents from factories and operation of ships.
Manila Bay is often filled with trash especially when there are strong typhoons.
The coliform level was reported to be very high in Boracay, one of the reasons why the island was closed. Coliform bacteria comes from human and animal stools. Boracay rehabilitation took six month, led by the DENR.
The island is now open but the guidelines of environmental rules is more strict than before. The number of tourists are now under control as well as the beach activities.
According to DENR Secretary Cimatu, his agency plans to remove pollution in Manila Bay to use the water in recreation such as swimming and diving. "We are preparing for an all-out strategy to bring the coliform concentration in Manila Bay to a safe level so that millions of people who reside in the bay region and neighboring areas will enjoy its waters and marine resources without fear of getting sick," Cimatu said in an interview last December 2018.
In the same interview, Sec. Cimatu called local government units to help restore the beauty of Manila Bay.
