Palace confirmed that President Rodrigo Duterte had not signed the joint Senate Bill No. 1477 and House Bill No. 8239 or the ’anti-palo’ bill that intends parents to prohibit beating their children as a way of discipline.
The bill was filed and authored by opposition Senator Risa Hontiveros.
According to Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, the President wants the parents to have authority over their children when it comes to disciplining them.
“Yung paternal authority sa bata nandoon [sa mga magulang], sila unang magdi-discipline sa mga anak nila. ‘Wag lang yung sobra… Alangan namang ikaw papabayaan mo anak mo iba bubogbog,” said Medialdea.

Based on the statement by former Special Assistant to President Christopher Bong Go, one of the President's reasons for vetoing the bill is because the President refuses to follow the style in western countries.
